How Do I Edit Items and Settings in My Story?

5 min read

Everything You Can Change

Once your story is generated, one panel controls how everything in it looks:

  • Characters — your child, family members, pets, or invented characters.
  • Items — the props of the story: a teddy bear, a spaceship, a birthday cake.
  • Setting items — the furnishings that make up a room or location: the bed, the bookshelf, the rug, the kitchen island.

Each one keeps its own look across the whole book, which is why editing it in one place updates it everywhere you choose.

💡

Changing a look costs nothing. What costs a regeneration is applying that look to a page — see making your regenerations go further.

Opening the Panel

  1. Open your story — Go to the story from "My Storybooks."
  2. Tap the More Options menu — Tap the More Options button in the toolbar.
  3. Select "Edit Characters & Items" — Tap Edit Characters & Items from the menu.

The panel opens on a grid: your characters first, then any items, then a tile for each setting in your story.

Editing a Character or an Item

Tap the tile. You'll get the edit screen for that one thing, with two ways to change it:

Refine with Guidance

Describe the change in your own words:

  • "Make the teddy bear brown instead of grey"
  • "Give the rug a blue and white pattern"
  • "Add fairy lights along the headboard"

Be specific — "give her a yellow raincoat with red boots" works better than "change her outfit."

Use a Photo

Tap the upload area to send a photo of the real thing. This is the strongest option when the story should match something real: your child's actual bed, their actual bookshelf, the toy they actually sleep with. The drawing is redrawn in your book's art style, so it fits the illustrations while being recognisably theirs.

For an item drawn by the AI rather than uploaded by you, this option reads "Use a photo" — there's no original photo to replace, you're supplying one for the first time.

Tap Generate New Look . You'll return to the grid with a spinner on that tile while the new version is drawn, usually 15–30 seconds. You can start editing something else while you wait.

Editing the Furniture of a Room

Settings work one level deeper, because a room has many pieces.

  1. Tap the setting's tile — it shows the room and how many items it holds.
  2. Pick the item — you'll see each piece of furniture on its own card: the bed, the wardrobe, the rug.
  3. Edit it exactly like anything else — guidance or a photo.

This is what makes a room feel like the room. Upload a photo of your child's real bookshelf and it appears on every page set in their bedroom, in your book's art style.

💡

Stories made before this feature existed don't have editable setting items, so those settings simply aren't listed in the panel. Everything else — characters and items — still works.

Version History

Every look you generate is kept. On the edit screen, the strip under the picture shows previous versions; tap any one to go back to it. The active version — the one that will be applied — is outlined.

Applying Your Changes to the Book

Generating a look doesn't change your book yet. It waits until you say which pages should show it.

  1. Tap "Continue to select pages."
  2. Review what's updated — everything you edited this session is listed at the top.
  3. Choose the pages — every page is listed, with the ones where your edit appears already ticked. Untick any you don't want.
  4. Add guidance (optional) — anything extra to change while those pages are redrawn.
  5. Check the cost — just above the button: "Uses 4 of your 30 regenerations."
  6. Tap "Apply changes to X pages."

Edit several things before applying. Characters, items and furniture you've changed are all applied together in one pass, and one page costs one regeneration no matter how many changes it carries.

Tips for Good Results

  • A photo beats a description for anything that exists in real life.
  • Check one page first — apply to a single page, look at it, then apply to the rest once you're happy.
  • Background furniture may barely show — a nightstand at the edge of a wide scene will change very little. Untick those pages and save the regenerations for pages where it's visible.
  • Be specific about what should stay — "same bed, just blue blanket" keeps more of what you already liked.
