Men are famously hard to buy for. He says he doesn't need anything, he buys the gadget himself the day it comes out, and another sweater feels like giving up. What he probably doesn't have is a book about the two of you.
A personalized book for your boyfriend or husband turns your story into an illustrated storybook with both of you as the main characters. Not a template with his name dropped in: your faces, drawn from your photos, and your story, told the way you remember it.
Why a book of your own story works as a Christmas gift
I started Lullaby making storybooks for my three kids. The thing I noticed early is that people don't get emotional about the illustrations. They get emotional when they recognize something only they would know: the bus stop, the nickname, the dog stealing the couch.
- He can't buy it himself. Nobody else has a book with your first date and the joke you still tell.
- It works at any stage. For a boyfriend at your first Christmas together and for a husband after twenty years.
- It gets reopened. On your anniversary, when friends visit, or on a bad day when one of you needs reminding how it started.
There's a whole page with sample books from other couples, page by page: the personalized book for couples.
8 story ideas for your boyfriend or husband
Write the idea with your real names and swap the details for yours. The more specific, the better the book: a real place, a phrase you say to each other, an object you both remember.
1. How you met
"Priya and Daniel meet at a rainy bus stop when his umbrella flips inside out and hits her in the face. He misses his bus apologizing and walks her home. The book ends five years later, with the broken umbrella still in their hallway."
2. The first date that went wrong
"Jess goes to the wrong restaurant and arrives an hour late. Mike is still waiting with two cold coffees. Every anniversary since, they order two coffees and let them go cold."
3. Your first trip together
"Sam and Alex take a road trip in an old car that breaks down halfway. They spend the night in a town that isn't on the map and decide it was the best trip of their lives."
4. The proposal
"Tom hides the ring in a cookie tin on a hike, and Emma nearly eats it. Tell it from the day he buys the ring to the moment she says yes." If you proposed to him, tell it from your side.
5. His thing, with you in it
Every man has the hobby that takes over a weekend: fishing, a football team, the grill, a bike he keeps fixing. "Every Saturday, Marcus wakes before sunrise to fish the same lake. One morning Theo comes along, falls in, and catches the only fish of the day." Write him as the hero of his own hobby and you as the one who teases him about it.
6. When the kids or the dog joined the story
"The story of Laura and Ben, told in chapters: just the two of them, then with their daughter Mia, then with Biscuit the dog. It ends with all four on the beach where they spent their honeymoon." A book can have up to four characters, pets included.
7. Your story, year by year
"From 2009, when Rachel and James met in college, to today: the wedding, the first apartment, the move, the dog." One moment per page. Enter each person's age when you add the characters and say in the idea what year each moment happened. Pages set 10 or more years ago show you both at the age you were then. Lullaby may ask for a photo from that time; if you don't have one, skip it and it draws you from today's photo.
8. An ordinary Tuesday
Not every book needs a big occasion. "A normal day for Claire and Nick: coffee in bed, the dog stealing his spot on the couch, dancing in the kitchen while dinner burns." Small details are often the ones that hit hardest.
How to make the book from your photos
- Upload a photo of yourself and one of him. A clear, front-facing photo works best. Add each person's age too. Lullaby turns the photos into cartoons, and you review them before the story is written. If you'd rather not use a photo, describe each person in words.
- Add anyone else. Kids, the dog, or the friend who introduced you. Up to four characters.
- Add your places. Upload a photo of the bar where you met or your first apartment so it appears in the illustrations.
- Write the story idea. Use one of the ideas above or tell it in your own words. Want it funnier or more romantic? Say so in the idea.
- Pick an illustration style and create the book.
- See the free preview. It includes the cover and two illustrated pages, so you see how you both look before paying anything.
- Unlock the digital book for $14.99 to see every page. You can edit the text and regenerate illustrations (with a limited number of regenerations).
- Order a printed book later, if you want one. It's a separate purchase: softcover $29.99, hardcover $39.99 or layflat $59.99, plus shipping.
If you want it printed for Christmas
The printed book is made to order, so it needs printing and shipping time. Before you pay, check the estimated delivery date for your address. There's no single date that works for every country, so go by the estimate you see.
If the timing doesn't work, give him the digital book on Christmas morning, read it together on a screen, and order the printed copy to arrive after. It's the same book.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good personalized book for my boyfriend?
One that tells your real story with both of you in it. A storybook about how you met, your first trip or a running joke only the two of you get means more than a book that just prints his name. On Lullaby you upload a photo of each of you, write the story idea, and both of you are illustrated as the main characters.
Can I make it as a surprise?
Yes. You upload a photo of yourself and one of him and write the story idea on your own. He sees the book for the first time when you give it to him.
Can the book show us as we were when we met?
Yes, if the story starts years ago. Enter each person's age when you add the characters and say in the story idea what year each moment happened. Pages set 10 or more years ago show you at the age you were then. Lullaby may ask for a photo from that time; you can skip it, and it draws you from today's photo.
How much does it cost?
Creating the book and seeing the preview is free: the cover and two illustrated pages. If you like it, you unlock the digital book for $14.99. The printed book is an optional second step, ordered separately with shipping.
Will the printed book arrive before Christmas?
It depends on where you live and when you order. Printed books are made to order, so check the estimated delivery date for your address before you pay. If it won't arrive in time, the digital book is ready in minutes and you can give the printed copy later.
